Description

The building is secluded from the main square by private gardens with citrus groves. Guests pass through the main gate and through the gardens to find the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria right on the seafront of Sorrento. The hotel dates back to the early 1800s and is built on the very same spot where the Roman Emperor August had his villa. The hotel has been owned by the Fiorentino family for four generations.

Precisely because of its unique layout, the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is able to offer a generous selection of rooms with a variety of features. Almost all rooms have a terrace or a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples or the beautiful hotel grounds. All rooms have private bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV, minibar, safe and direct-dial telephone. The historic suites are tastefully furnished with original period furniture and have a terrace looking out over the Bay, affording splendid views and spectacular sunsets. The Enrico Caruso suite, very much in demand, retains the same décor and furnishings as when the famous Italian tenor stayed there for more several months, in 1921. The Pompeii Suite has recently been renovated and decorated with frescoes inspired by the decoration of the most handsome villas in nearby Pompeii.

The two restaurants are very different from one another. The main restaurant is the imposing "Vittoria" dining room with its original decorated ceilings of the early 19th century. The "Bosquet" is a more intimate dining room, at its best in spring and summer when diners can enjoy the view from the beautiful terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples. Once a week during summer, a candle-lit buffet dinner is served to all guests on the panoramic "Vittoria Terrace". After dinner, with a live orchestra playing romantic melodies and the lights of Naples twinkling across the Bay, even the most reluctant dancer will surely take a turn on the floor.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is notable not least for its private gardens, which lead from the main square of Sorrento to the Hotel entrance. Five acres of luxuriant grounds full of beautiful Mediterranean plants and flowers, the gardens are an important part of Sorrento, containing a number of very old specimens and magnificent blooms. Guests can enjoy a stroll and admire the plants, or simply relax in the shade of the trees and take in the unparalleled beauty of the Bay of Naples. And with no shortage of different paths to follow, this is also the ideal place to take a jog or do a few keep-fit exercises in the open air.

Also situated in the gardens is the swimming pool where guests can relax and bathe in the perfect setting, and enjoy good food sitting in the orange grove nearby. Located in the park, surrounded by olive trees, orange and lemon trees, by huge Mediterranean pine trees, palms and bougainvillea....green, white and pink colours matching with the natural-coloured pool. 0.85 to 1.70 metres deep, 11.60 metres wide , 25 metres long, the pool has an entrance area with confortable steps entering in the water: once inside, you find yourself in the 0.85 metres deep area where there is the water massage that you enjoy while sitting on a marble bench. The central and final area is for swimming: the central one has got a sophisticated system for swimming upstream. The material used for the pool is a natural coloured marble put in small pieces 3 cm X 3cm in order to create a mosaic. The edge and the external part of the floor is in Trani's marble installed following the Antique Romans' style "opus romano". The part next to the edge is made of wood teak, a prestigious material, the same used for boat decks.

The children's pool, with the same material, has been created some metres far from the main pool in order not to disturb the adults. Between the adults'pool and the children's pool there is soemthing unique....the Roman Emperor Augustus not only had his villa where the Excelsior Vittoria is today but also a...swimming pool! In fact, during the works, some ruins have been found: first of all a lead tube with the writing "Marco Aurelio Antonino", who maybe was the plumber! Then some walls with waste outlets which make the experts think it was a pool. These ruins are visible and protected by a railing.

The solarium made of teak was completed in 2006 and reaches the surface of 800 sm. The new area is used in Summertime for special events such as jazz concerts.

There is also a snack bar and restaurant area, where you can enjoy pizza, grilled fish and meat, local recipes and have fun in the evening, with open bar accompanied by music entertainment. In July and August, the swimming pool is used for aquagym courses twice a week. The Holistic Centre La Serra is a unique location within the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria’s two acre orange grove. Created in a converted 19th Century greenhouse, adjoining the hotel’s swimming-pool, La Serra is surrounded by olive and orange trees and enjoys natural sunlight for most of the day. The Holistic Centre La Serra offers exclusive rituals and treatments to purify the body and soothe the senses with the most natural products and essential oils of the Organic Pharmacy, Salin de Biosel and Signature brands. La Serra has two separate treatment suites, a single one and a double one for couples. Each suite fully equipped for the ultimate pampering has its own private Jacuzzi bath-tub, a rain shower and according to the season or weather conditions, a private garden for outdoor relaxation, private changing room; a single room for shiatsu massage and treatments with private changing room and an additional room for manicure and pedicure.
